ESIL MIGREFLAW IG SYMPOSIUM FOR ADIM BLOG

THE RULE OF LAW WITHIN AND BEYOND THE EUROPEAN MIGRATION AND REFUGEE CRISIS
On 3 April 2019, the European Society of International Law (ESIL) Interest Group on Migration and Refugee Law (IG MigRefLaw) hosted a very successful Workshop at the University of Göttingen (Germany) in the framework of the ESIL Research Forum on ‘The International Rule of Law and Domestic Dimensions: Synergies and Challenges’. The speakers were selected following a competitive call for papers on ‘Migration and the Rule of Law’, to focus on the function and implications of the rule of law in migration issues, especially in the European context.
The outcomes of the Workshop have been remarkable for the fruitfulness of the discussions they prompted. With a view to collecting and sharing these outcomes in a structured manner, the ESIL IG MigRefLaw, in cooperation with the Academy of Law and Migration (ADiM) of the University of Tuscia (Viterbo) is launching a blog symposium entitled “The Rule of Law Within and Beyond the European Migration and Refugee Crisis”!
The Symposium will be hosted by the ADiM Blog and published by the end of May. It is a joint initiative, thus both ADiM and the ESIL IG MigRefLaw will promote a broad academic and professional readership of the Symposium.
The Symposium is inspired by the desire to contribute to the ongoing debate around the European rule of law and domestic dimensions. Therefore, it is open to all scholars who show their interest in replying to the first round of posts. Potential contributors are invited to submit their posts (length: max 2000 words; languages: English or French), alongside a short bio (max 500 words) and a photo to migreflaw@gmail.com. The posts need to comply with the requirements set forth in the EJIL: Talk! authors’ guide.
The proposed structure of the Symposium follows three threads:
- A) The challenges to the EU rule of law, deriving or connected to the management of large flows of migrants and refugees.
- The nature and impact of crisis-management and operational tools, adopted by the Union to tackle the migratory upstream, on the EU rule of law.
- The structural mechanisms and normative tools of the EU legal system, capable of resisting and (possibly) reversing the crisis of the EU rule of law.
