Siracusa IV – ALUM Research Conference Series on Migration
Siracusa IV – ALUM Research Conference Series on Migration
June 24th-25th, 2019
Ortygia Business School – Siracusa, Italy
The Ortygia Business School Center for Migration, the Institute of Global Affairs at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the Alliance of Leading Universities on Migration (ALUM) and the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) are pleased to announce the 4th Annual Siracusa – ALUMN Research Conference on Migration, supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union on June 24-25, 2019 in Siracusa, Italy, under the umbrella of the Oversto Project.
This year’s conference focuses on the link between migration and development. Several international studies confirm that migration enhances the development of origin and destination countries. However, the potential of migration is not yet fully exploited. While migration can be a powerful poverty reduction tool and contribute to the achievement of all the SDGs, the specific risks and vulnerabilities of migrants are often overlooked. This coupled with a weak implementation of support programmes and major data gaps calls for renewed research efforts and policy action. The 4th Annual Siracusa – ALUM Research Conference on Migration will seek to address these and several other key questions including do policy makers sufficiently take migration into account in their respective policy areas? How to better integrate migration into development strategies? Is it necessary to improve co-ordination mechanisms and strengthen international co-operation?
Building on the work of the previous ALUM conferences, this year’s Siracusa conference will last two days and have three components: Academic Conference Policy in Practice Sessions, Final Citizens’ Dialogue. We hereby also invite extended abstract and paper submissions that are relevant to the conference theme and/or could address the nexus between migration and one of the following themes:

ALUM is a unique collaboration among leading universities in Europe, North America, and frontier refugee recipient countries in North Africa and the Middle East. We aim to help bridge the gap between research and policy in the analysis and management of migration and the refugee crisis. ALUM has made contributions to the recent report to the Secretary General as well as the G7, and has directly engaged with global policy makers in the context of the G7, G20 and the Global Forum for Migration and Development.
For more information on the conference and the call for papers, kindly contact Ms Camilla Fortunati camilla.fortunati@ortygiabs.org and Angelo Martelli, respectively.
